Books and papers, performances and films: different ways in which Sue Jennings and Andy Hickson have explored ideas, shared discoveries and invited people into creative work.
An evolving catalogue. Research leads are identified separately, and original dates, credits and editions are checked as evidence becomes available.
Sue Jennings
Across more than five decades, Sue's work has taken many published forms. The catalogue includes books she wrote, volumes she edited with colleagues, chapters, papers and practical resources.
Dr Sue Emmy Jennings has been one of the pioneers of dramatherapy as a field of applied drama. Her work has brought theatre, play, therapeutic practice and research into conversation for more than six decades. With colleagues at the Dramatherapy Centre in London, she helped establish the Association for Dramatherapists, which later became the British Association of Dramatherapists. She developed a multi-theoretical approach to supervision and has worked creatively with children and adults, including in educational settings and prisons.
Her teaching and research have extended well beyond the workshop. She established the dramatherapy course at the University of Hertfordshire, which continued until 2003, and taught supervision courses internationally, including in Israel and Greece. Historical professional profiles record appointments as Senior Research Fellow at the London Hospital Medical Centre, where she taught medical students and researched creative work with couples undergoing fertility treatment, and Honorary Research Fellow at the Shakespeare Institute.
Alongside her dramatherapy practice, Sue has performed, directed and toured in theatre-in-education, Shakespearean, classical and contemporary productions. This breadth of experience runs through her publications, from early books on remedial drama and creative therapy to writing on theatre, ritual, developmental play, storytelling and Neuro-Dramatic-Play.

Andy Hickson
Creative action methods, Social Theatre, anti-bullying, groupwork, anthropology, education and research.
Andy Hickson’s publications, theatre productions and films have grown from a long involvement in creative participation. Theatre came first, through directing and theatre-in-education, followed by work with Augusto Boal and the development of Andy’s own approach to Social Theatre during the 1990s. His writing on creative action methods and groupwork explores what happens when people become active participants, using performance to investigate experiences, relationships and possible responses to everyday situations.
Through Hey! Hey! Theatre Company, TIE Tours and Actionwork, Andy has written, devised and directed productions for schools, communities and international audiences. Bullying, violence, racism, identity and empowerment recur across that work, including his research into how young people can develop their own creative anti-bullying strategies. His publications also reflect work in education, social anthropology and collaborations with Sue, especially their long relationship with the Temiar.
Film has offered another way to share these ideas, from early theatre-in-education and anti-bullying productions to creative educational films, university media and more recent Actionwork series. The lists that follow show the breadth of this work in print, on stage and on screen, while Play Absolutely continues as a shared conversation with Sue.
